“Emergency Room Stretcher Wait Times: Understanding the Impact of Pandemic and Best Practices for Improvement”

2023-04-18 21:39:24

Stretcher wait times in the emergency room are getting longer, but Minister Christian Dubé says the picture might have been worse due to the repercussions of the pandemic.

“Am I satisfied with the results we have in our emergencies? I would say ”yes” to you, because of the pandemic, ”commented the Minister of Health on Tuesday.

The Journal reported in the morning that the average waiting time on a stretcher now stands at 6 p.m.the longest delay in at least 15 years.

But Minister Dubé recalls several measures put in place to relieve the pressure on emergencies. Some 5,000 calls are made every day at the first-line access counter, he points out. “That’s people who say: I don’t want to go to the emergency room, can I have a service other than the emergency room,” he pleads.

The “crisis cell” set up during the winter to resolve the crisis in the emergency room also made it possible to prevent the situation from deteriorating further, according to Mr. Dubé.

“Despite the pandemic, we managed to stabilize. Because we might be at 9 p.m., 25 hours away. We went up until 9 p.m., then we came back around 5 or 6 p.m., ”he explained.

Best practices

Now, the Minister is counting on his vast reform of the health network to improve delays in a lasting way by sharing “best practices” between establishments.

At Charles-Le Moyne Hospital, on the South Shore of Longueuil, it takes only six hours to see a medical specialist, he points out.

“So between the best ERs with six hours of wait time and those with 35-40 hours, which give you an average of regarding 20 hours, you can see that there is a big difference”, emphasizes Christian Dubé.
