Emergency Rescue Operation: Repatriating Sick Researcher from Antarctica

Australia has launched an emergency rescue operation to repatriate a sick researcher to Antarctica.

An icebreaker has left Tasmania’s capital, Horbat, on its way to Casey Station in Antarctica, a journey of more than 3,400 kilometres, reports the BBC.

The researcher in question is said to be experiencing “complications of illness” according to Australia’s Antarctic program.

The agency did not give further details on the nature of this disease.

An evacuation by air was considered, but the boat was preferred due to the difficult weather conditions.

The icebreaker was prepared for several weeks before leaving the port of Horbat.

Evacuations in this very remote region are often complex and sometimes require the assistance of international partners.

In December 2020, Australia needed the help of the United States and China to evacuate a person who was part of an expedition.
