Firefighters from several emergency areas in East Flanders received dozens of calls on Tuesday related to the floods affecting the entire province. The alert threshold has already been crossed in three places in the Scheldt watershed as well as in the Dendre watershed, according to the waterinfo.be website.
Since Tuesday followingnoon, the Center’s emergency zone has received around 20 calls from across the area, including Deinze, Zulte, Oosterzele, Zomergem, Merelbeke, Wetteren and Ghent. The province’s firefighters must mainly intervene for flooded streets and threatened homes. Interventions are also underway in Aalter, Wetteren, Oudenaarde, Lede and Grammont.
According to waterinfo.be, additional rainfall is forecast for Tuesday evening and the water level will continue to rise. “On the Dendre at Overboelare, the flow rate is currently around 20 m3/s. Due to the expected precipitation, the flow might reach around 40 m3/s this evening and tonight, which might lead to the alert and pre-alert thresholds being exceeded downstream of the Dendre (Idegem, Pollare, Denderleeuw) . The filling of the Denderbellebroek is also expected this evening,” the site indicates.
