Residents in the vicinity are evacuating as fears of the collapse of the Sanbukcheon Riverbank in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, a tributary of the Geumgang River, have increased due to monsoon rains that continued for the fourth day.
Iksan-si issued an emergency evacuation order today (16th) at around 6 am at the bottom of the Sanbukcheon embankment near the Seokdong drainage in Yongan-myeon, and 4 meters of soil flowed down. We are moving you to your destination.
Evacuation targets include seven villages in Yongan-myeon, Sineun, Seok-dong, Kitchen, Ulsan, Seok-woo, Yongdu, and Beopseong, and three additional villages in Songgok, Gan-i, and Gunghang, which were advised to evacuate in advance yesterday.
Iksan City and the Korea Rural Community Corporation started emergency restoration work last night as the risk of collapse increased as the water level of the Geum River rose due to the increased discharge of Daecheong Dam and continuous heavy rain.
Iksan City explained that it is not an emergency situation such as collapse or river flooding as the monsoon rains are showing a lull.
Previously, the Korea Rural Community Corporation’s Geumgang Project Group opened all 20 lock gates of the Geumgang Estuary Bank from yesterday as a large amount of rainwater flowed in.
