In-ho, a veteran detective in the movie ‘Emergency Declaration’, which will be released on the 3rd of next month, resembles the office worker gangster population in the 2007 film ‘Elegant World’. In-ho and In-ho, both played by Song Kang-ho, struggle to find a balance between organization and family. Although he is not good at expressing himself, he is a father who cares deeply for his wife and daughter.
After working with director Han Jae-rim in ‘Elegant World’ for the first time, Song Kang-ho met for the third time with ‘Emergency Declaration’ following ‘Contemplation’ (2013). Song Kang-ho, who met through video on the 27th, said, “Knowing the director had a big impact on my acting this time.”
In-ho of ‘Emergency Declaration’ struggles on the ground with various figures such as Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Sook-hee (played by Jeon Do-yeon) and Tae-soo (Park Hae-joon), head of the Blue House Crisis Management Center, for the safety of passengers on planes who have been hit by the virus. It’s even more dire when her wife, who is on vacation to Hawaii following boiling gom soup, is on a plane.
“I focused on the dilemma of people who want to save so much, but have a clear limit on earth. It should not be expressed only sadly or emotionally, and it should not be thought too rationally and coldly. It was important how to properly express that part. “
Through the subject of biochemical terrorism, the film projects the landscape of Korean society that has passed through the COVID-19 pandemic. However, director Han Jae-rim conceived an aviation disaster film regarding 10 years ago, and it was before the pandemic when he started working in earnest. When the film was screened at last year’s Cannes Film Festival in France, it was praised as “timely”.
Song Kang-ho said, “When I was preparing for the first time, even when the word Corona didn’t exist, it came to me interestingly.”
“You can go through disasters big and small in your life. I think it is important how you accept and solve problems. In that respect, this film is different from other disaster films. The first thing that came to me was the thought that it contains the thought of community and neighbors, and if you can feel the precious value of life that you know but do not feel through this work, I don’t think it will be worth it.”
The movie realistically embodied the plane’s appearance by using a gimbal that rotates a set made of a real airplane 360 degrees. However, Song Kang-ho was unable to participate in the in-flight filming because he had to solve the case on the ground.
“At first, I had a slight idea of wanting to fly an airplane, and I told Lee Byung-hun (who played Jae-hyeok) that he was envious of acting because he never appeared on set. But when I saw a machine called a gimbal, it was really scary. I was beaten and suffered a lot, but I thought regarding how happy I am to be on earth.”
Kang-ho Song, who received the Best Actor trophy at the Cannes Film Festival for ‘The Broker’ in May last year, was reunited with Jeon Do-yeon, who received the Best Actress Award for ‘Miryang’ (2007) at the same film festival. ‘The Lawyer’ (2013), in which Song Kang-ho plays lawyer Woo-seok, is also the film debut of Im Si-wan, who plays a powerful terrorist in this work.
“Both Jeon Do-yeon and Lee Byung-hun have been together for more than 20 years. Because of the split between airplane and ground, we mightn’t get together every time to shoot, but it was so nice and we had a good time.” About Im Si-wan, he said: “If Sohn Seok-gu is in ‘Crime City’, there is Im Si-wan in ‘Emergency Declaration’.”
