Often the weather influences not only our activities, but also the way we eat. Suffice to say that the salads, barbecue and seasonal fruits are not really successful. On the other hand, raclettes and tartiflettes are making a comeback… Example in Gerpinnes, in the province of Hainaut. In the butcher-cheese shop where Noël Frippart, the manager, works, the staff is supposed to thread meat on skewers for barbecues this season. But these are other preparations that are being developed at the moment: “We just finished tartiflette with onions, potatoes, etc.”
With the drop in temperature, the greyness, the continuous rain, customers have changed their menu. They turn to hot, hearty dishes that lift their spirits. “We are happy to find our hot dishes, from autumn. It’s a little comforting”, judges a client interviewed by Céline Praile in the RTL Info 19h. At Noël Frippart, sales of minced meat or roasts increased by 50% compared to the same period last year. Five raclette trays are also sold each week.
Same clohce sound for fruits and vegetables
A little further, a fruit and vegetable store. Salad, melon and watermelon are shunned by customers. “We have no choice. We are falling back on more winter vegetables, because we are starting to make soups, etc.“, explains a client. Another continues: “ Me, I came to buy to make good soups; cauliflower, things that we gratinate that are not necessarily in season. But hey, we adapt.”
In the store, the problem is to sell the stock of seasonal fruits and vegetables; most of them have promotions, a godsend for those who like the sun on their table.
