Ebenezer Asante, Senior Vice President of Markets at MTN Group, has made an impassioned appeal to African governments to embrace technology as a driver of cross-border trade and ease of doing business in West Africa. Speaking at the recent “Africa Prosperity Dialogues” event in Accra, Ghana, Asante urged industry players and government officials to support cross-border trade by ending what he described as “ tyranny of sovereignty.”

The MTN Group vice chairman welcomed Ghana’s decision to allow Africans to travel visa-free, but he also highlighted the obstacles Africans face when making cross-border payments and transactions.

Asante said: “The tyranny of sovereignty must end to enable efficient trade and facilitate business in West Africa. Technology continues to transform the way we trade, and we must exploit the immense opportunities it offers to trade within our borders. » He added that closing borders hinders progress by preventing the flow of trade. “African countries must open their borders to each other to promote intercontinental trade”he insisted.

Nompilo Morafo, Director of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs, MTN Group, as well as Selorm Adadevoh, CEO of MTN Ghana, also participated in the Africa Prosperity Dialogues panel discussion on the theme “Critical Factors for Market Success unique – Harnessing infrastructure, innovation and technology”.

Adadevoh stressed that it was not enough to invest in infrastructure without developing the necessary skills. He recalled that Africa had the largest young population in the world and called for the transformation of the education system towards a digital model. Morafo highlighted the importance of collaboration between businesses and legislators to drive Africa’s development.
