RadioFr: Jain, to release this latest album “The Fool”, there was a big 4-year break. August 2019, you are coming to the end of a 5-year international tour, you decide to cancel the last dates due to extreme fatigue. You put down your suitcases in Marseille to return to your first loves, painting and drawing. This break was really necessary. Did it lead you to ask yourself a lot of questions to start working on this 3rd album?
Jain: Yes, I think it’s important that as an artist, when you write songs, you sometimes take a step back and question yourself. And on top of that, for 2 years, there was Covid. That’s also why it took so long. But it’s true that after the tour, I needed to refocus on myself, to stop the jet lag, the concerts, etc. I wanted to live my life, to meet up with my friends, to meet up with my family, to find time to listen to music too, because that’s not necessarily something you do when you do a lot of concerts. I also took the time to reposition myself as a person who loves music above all.
This album takes us to another universe, to a cosmic, psychedelic universe, I want to say also, with pop sounds from the 70s and 80s. You took advantage of this confinement to listen to music. And you discovered an artist, Kate Bush, who inspired you a lot for this album?
I obviously knew the name Kate Bush, and her big hits, but I didn’t really know her discography, especially a song that really moved me, called “The Kick Inside”. I think this title is from her first album, by the way. And for me, it was an entry into the world of English pop from the 70s, 80s. And suddenly, there was an opening onto another world that I didn’t necessarily know and which inspired me for this album.
An album that is more personal, we talk a lot about love. And what’s funny is that the city of Marseille and your divinatory card game also inspired you for this album. So, super cool concept, each song corresponds to a card of the Tarot of Marseille?
Yes, because in fact, it’s true that there were a lot of signals that made me go towards the Tarot of Marseille. I started writing songs, including a song called “Maria”, when I was in Marseille, on guitar and voice. My mother draws the Tarot of Marseille, and I draw. And so, I wanted to mix everything up, to take these signs and make a concept around this album too.
And today, there is this new single, “Nobody Knows”, that you composed in Los Angeles with Maxime Nucci. There are a lot of sounds in this title, rock sounds, electro pop sounds, disco sounds. It sounds very 80s. It’s an ultra-festive title that falls right in time for these festivals. Was it also perhaps a way to test it?
Yes, we really released it with the idea of doing it live and offering it to people live. Because it’s true that we rearranged a lot of old songs in a more electro and more rock way too. And I wanted to release this song, precisely, which represents well what’s happening live, on stage, and which has a correspondence between what we’re doing at the moment and this new song that’s been released.
I think Los Angeles inspired you a lot. Did you take advantage of it to write other songs apart from this single “Nobody Knows”?
Yes, it’s true that we went there for two weeks with part of my team and Yodelice. And it was incredible because all day long, we made music, we had a view of the Los Angeles valley. So of course, it also inspires a style that is different.
Jain, I’m taking you into a little crush moment. I’d like to have your crush among all the tracks on your latest album “The Fool”?
It’s very difficult, but I think it would be “Maria”, but the live version. Because we rearranged it, it’s about 10 minutes long, and it feels good to make songs without necessarily thinking about the structure.
Your crush among your three big hits “Come”, “Makeba” and “The Fool”?
That’s also very hard… But I would say “The Fool” even if so many extraordinary things happened around the title “Makeba” that inevitably… It came out on TikTok, which made me go around the world. Come on, so “Makeba”.
