Secret Santa in Luxembourg: “There is only one gift left, but it is very beautiful!”
LUXEMBOURG – Secret Santa also has his followers in the Grand Duchy. A good way to combat the purchase of unnecessary gifts and limit waste.

As Christmas Eve approaches, “Secret Santa”, or “secret Santa Claus” in French, flourish in many countries in Europe. This Anglo-Saxon tradition consists of offering a gift to one of your colleagues or a family member chosen at random, with a limited budget. The practice is also spreading in Luxembourg, for economic, ecological or organizational reasons. Because it’s also a good way to fight against waste and the purchase of useless gifts that end up in the back of a cupboard.
“We practice Secret Santa at work and at family,” explains Carla. At work, this happens between colleagues and the budget is 20 euros. As a family, we reserve it for adults, because the children are always very spoiled! The adults draw a name and offer a gift voucher to the person drawn. This faithful reader of The essential also explains that thanks to Secret Santa, the value of gifts has changed a lot… “Before, we bought lots of small gifts. Since we have been doing Secret Santa, the budget per adult has reached 150-200 euros, so there is only one gift left, but it is very beautiful!”

For her part, Natascha indicates that she uses an application (drawnames.com) for his Secret Santa. “To spend less money and be sure to buy something useful that the person really wants and needs, we create anonymous wishlists in the app,” she says. We set a budget of 50 euros this year for various gifts: cookbook, backpack, decorative candle, light alarm clock, wallet, perfume…”.
For Sandrine, Secret Santa also took place a few days before Christmas, at her workplace. “A colleague wrote down all the first names of the members of our team and that of our boss and everyone drew a first name at random, without saying which one of course. The budget should not exceed 10 or 20 euros. I gave my colleague a crackling candle and a pack of marshmallow teddy bears. I knew it would please him!”
