VATICAN CITY: May God’s mercy blossom in many hearts and individuals in this year of preparation for the Jubilee. So that God may be more loved, accepted and praised, Pope Francis. The Pope’s comments came while speaking to seminarians in a class organized by the Apostolic Penitentiary on the importance of penitential prayer.
The Pope said that their mission is to help people who come to confession to experience the sweetness of God’s love. Each confession is a unique and unrepeatable moment of grace. The Pope said that the priests should observe the Lord’s patience and dignity in the confessional. The Pope also spoke by quoting the Manastapa prakarana prayer recited before receiving absolution
Repent of our sins and not accuse ourselves of guilt
The Pope first spoke regarding repentance. That said, it is very different from guilt. The Pope added that repentance springs from the awareness of God’s infinite love and boundless mercy. Christian repentance is not self-destructive but full of faith in God’s patience and fatherhood. The Pope reminded us that the more we feel the tenderness of Jesus, the more we can have full communion with him.
Relying on God’s goodness
Later, Pope Francis spoke regarding faith. Because the prayer of repentance describes God as good and worthy of all love. Loving God above all else means making God the center of our lives and entrusting everything to Him.
Determined never to sin once more with God’s help
Finally the Pope spoke of the resolve that the penitent will not fall back into the sin committed. This firmness, the Pope said, allows us to pass from suffering to repentance and from imperfection to complete sorrow.
The Pope said that the words “I firmly resolve by your grace to sin no more and to avoid the recent occasion of sin” express not a promise but a resolution. None of us can promise God that we will never sin once more. Our commitment to never sin once more goes hand in hand with our plea for God’s help, the Pope said.
God is mercy. His name is Karuna. The Pope concluded the sermon by saying that we should always remember his face and that God’s face shines in every act of mercy and in every act of love.
