“Have you ever had the feeling that you are acting or pretending to be someone you are not really? Do you act like others want you to be? Do you feel insecure regarding any part of your body? If your answer is “yes” let me give you some advice: take a break in your life and rethink all this. Appearances matter and although it may seem superficial, the truth is that they have an impact on well-being, affecting us in ways that we can conceive of” This is what Javier Ramírez, the renowned Colombian actor, presenter and content creator and author of the book Sin Gais No Hay, thinks. Paradise.
According to Javier, society imposes standards on us that are not realistic or achievable for most people. And it is precisely this pressure to fulfill them that leads people to constant comparison with others and generate feelings of insecurity and low self-esteem.
“Since we are little we are taught to judge and we are judged by our appearance. The clothes we wear, our hairstyle, our figure, even our tastes and behaviors are a reason for criticism and comparison. We grow and forge our identity surrounded by these comments. For my part, as I tell in my book “Without gays there is no paradise”, I was even expelled from school for defending my ideals, ”she says.
Another of the points that the influencer, who already has more than 3.4 million followers on Instagram, talks regarding, is that beliefs, tastes and sexual orientation also make young people more vulnerable to criticism. “Throughout history there has been constant pressure on LGBTQ+ people to hide our identity in various settings, including the entertainment industry. In the world of acting, this pressure has been going on for decades. Many actors and actresses have hidden our homosexuality for fear of losing roles or jobs, or simply for fear of discrimination and rejection.
The lack of representation and the pressure to hide diversity only perpetuates the stereotypes and rejection of the diverse population. For the young artist, a change in the industry is necessary so that diverse people can feel safe and comfortable in their workplace, and so that young queers who feel alone and misunderstood can have role models on screen.
“As a public figure, I have taken it upon myself to be more selective with the projects and brands I work with, and I bet on those that invite us to authenticity, respect for diversity and celebrate differences and, above all, to maintain our well-being. There are many examples of them, but among them I would like to highlight Mike’s, which from its brand purpose motivates us to be ourselves and leave prejudices in the closet -which are the only ones that should be there-”, he adds.
Javier Ramírez is clear that as a public figure he wants to motivate change in his generation and be increasingly relevant to his followers, for this reason, he delivers a message to all those who today feel pressured by stereotypes “Today I want to invite you to be part of the change, of the solution and not of the problem. Let’s learn to be more responsible towards the comments we make to others and promote respect and inclusion. Differences are what makes us unique; but, above all, the invitation is to be more respectful of ourselves, to question the way we treat ourselves, the standards we set for ourselves, and the people we associate with. Let us remember that our well-being is also part of our health.”
