The announcement of the return to school comes in a context in which protests in the education sector continue due to the lack of salary increases, although in August they showed a decrease compared to July.
According to the latest report from the Institute for Advanced Trade Union Studies (Inaesin), published on September 5, the education sector accounted for 9.09% of labor conflicts in August, while in July it stood at 44.44%.
Among the reasons that led teachers and other workers in the sector to leave were decent salaries and better working conditions.
Inaesin explained that the labor conflict figures for the month of July 2024 do not reflect the true situation of Venezuelan workers, since the presidential election was held in that month and “workers put aside their just demands to make way for a process in which a change in public policies was expected.”
Teachers have left the public sector
On August 20, the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers (FVM) reported that more than 100,000 teachers have resigned from the public education system in the last two years.
“We have a large teacher shortage. The Ministry of Education data from two years ago was 500,000 teachers. Today, the data is at 400,000 teachers, they gave us an estimate. This means that more than 100,000 teachers have left schools,” he warned in an interview for Wave Circuit.
For his part, the president of the Venezuelan Union of Teachers of the Capital District, Edgar Machado, insisted that teachers are experiencing a complex situation in the country, as a consequence of low salaries.
“We are in a vacation period, where teachers have not really had any vacations because they have been trying to survive on these starvation wages,” he said.
He commented that many educators have dedicated themselves to other activities that generate greater income and do not return to the classrooms.
Mosaic schedule and complaints about structural damage
During the 2023-2024 period, workers in the education sector reported structural damage and failures in public services at schools. They also mentioned that this past school year the mosaic schedule was maintained in many institutions.
Regarding this, Carlos Calatrava, director of the School of Education at the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB), believes that the mosaic schedule in schools represents a step backwards for Venezuela.
He explained that 82% of the country’s schools maintained the mosaic schedule, influenced by the structural conditions of the educational centers, such as the teachers’ salaries that do not allow them to cover their basic needs, so they spend their time on other remunerative activities.
“There should be no doubt that this call for reflection affects children in their learning process, socialization and cognitive development. A child who does not go to school is a negative balance for the country’s destiny,” Calatrava said in an interview for Radio Faith and Joy July 19th
Expenditures on school supplies and uniforms for the 2024-2025 school year
According to two reports from The Diary, Parents and guardians will spend an average of $76 to purchase the list of supplieswhile uniforms alone could cost more than $50, depending on the number of items purchased.
How much do uniforms cost? On the boulevard of Sabana Grande (Caracas), the school fair offers white shirts (up to size 12) in a promotion of three for 10 dollars; on the other hand, the blue and beige shirts cost 5 dollars each. In addition, they offer two white shirts for 3 dollars.
Short-sleeved button-down shirts cost $7, while pants range from $8 to $15, depending on the fabric. Skirts cost $7.
As for shoes, they can vary between 13 and 15 dollars depending on the school fair where they are purchased.
