The European Medicines Agency (EMA) launched an investigation into the slimming drugs Ozempic, Saxenda and Wegovy on Tuesday following the Icelandic Medicines Agency said the latter may be linked to suicidal thoughts and cases of self-harm.
The Icelandic Medicines Agency report lists 150 reports of self-harm and suicidal thoughts. The drugs under investigation are widely marketed, with up to 20 million patients using them each year. They are primarily intended for diabetics, but Ozempic and Wegovy are also used as appetite reducers.
However, the EMA points out that it is not yet clear whether these drugs are the cause of the symptoms mentioned, or if this lies in other factors, such as underlying conditions affecting the patients. The Medicines Agency plans to issue an opinion by November.
