The EM Lyon business school will close its Saint-Etienne campus dedicated to bachelors at the end of the academic year. Objective: to bring together all the students of the training cycle on its future Lyon-Gerland site, announced its majority shareholder, the CCI Lyon Métropole, Saint-Etienne, Roanne.

Chaired by Guillaume Pépy, the EM Lyon supervisory board validated this Thursday, September 28, the strategic direction of management, consisting of continuing the grouping on a single site of the entire Bac+4 Bachelor training offer of Business Administration (BBA) from this consular school. Consequence: the Saint-Etienne site will close at the end of the 2023-2024 academic year. However, the EM Lyon campus in Saint-Etienne brings together nearly a thousand students and around thirty employees, excluding teachers.

Or, they will have to change schools. Either, they will have to continue their education in the Rhône, EM Lyon having decided to refocus on its future site, located in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon. The Lyon business school is currently investing 150 million euros in the construction of new premises in the Gerland district. She plans to transfer the school located in Écully there in 2024.

Although negative for regional planning, the elected representatives of the metropolitan CCI did not oppose the removal of the Saint-Etienne center. With a minority vote, they abstained during the supervisory board vote. “If it is a good decision for the school, that is not the case when it comes to land use planning,” Yves Chavent, 1st vice-president of the CCI and vice-president of the school’s supervisory board, declared to AFP. So what future for the Saint-Etienne site?EM Lyon will gradually redeploy a new initial training offer in Saint-Etienne by 2026, in partnership with several higher education establishments present there. said Yves Chavent.

On the Saint-Etienne site, EM Lyon was established in 2014 in the premises of ESC Saint-Etienne, a business school. She lost her high school grade at the end of 2012.

This closure of the Saint-Etienne center of EM Lyon will follow the cessation, last year, of the BBAs prepared on two other sites of the school: in Paris and Casablanca.

Last October, the Lyon public prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into the management of EM Lyon between 2014 and 2020, following a report from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Audit Chamber (CRC).
The report targeted two partnerships signed in 2014 and 2017 with the IT company IMB, costing 40 million euros, two contracts worth 60,000 euros in favor of the consulting company of a former general director of the establishment between 2014 and 2019 and the departure conditions of his successor paid up to 573,000 euros in 2020.

The CRC report also questioned the financial risks linked to the creation of seven new EM Lyon campuses, in France, Morocco and India, for a total investment of 29.3 million euros, and to the cost of installation on the new Écully campus in Lyon. The report nevertheless noted that the “new management (of the school) had taken measures” following the recommendations of the CRC.

Ranked fifth nationally among business schools, EM Lyon Business School has more than 9,000 students in initial training.
