After the defeat in the match for third place, Dennis Schröder spoke about the 2025 European Championship and his future. The US men and women are also making Olympic history. All the news in the update.
Germany comes fourth
The DBB team lost the match for third place against Serbia and narrowly missed out on a medal. In the 83:93 defeat, Nikola Jokic shone with a triple-double of 19 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. This meant that Germany missed out on its third medal in three years and the crowning conclusion of the Gordon Herbert era. The 65-year-old is moving to FC Bayern.
“A chapter of life is coming to an end. The players have given their heart and soul for three years, it’s like a family,” said Gordon Herbert after the game. “I’m sad right now because this has come to an end. It’s been an incredible ride over the last three years, as a coach you can only dream of having guys like that.”
Captain Dennis Schröder thanked the 65-year-old for the time they spent together. “We thank the coach for everything he has done, he has given us so much,” said Dennis afterwards. “In the three years we have won two medals, we wanted a third. But we have still achieved something unique and are looking forward.”
The European Championship next year is now the goal, said the captain. “We want to come back next summer for something big,” explained the 30-year-old.
Team USA wins gold
Team USA has won Olympic gold for the fifth time in a row. In a thrilling final against host France, the US team won 98:87. Man of the match was Steph Curry, who scored 24 points and hit several important three-pointers in the final phase.
“It was one of the best games of his career,” US coach Steve Kerr said of Curry. “His hits were just unbelievable. But under these circumstances, away in Paris, against France for the gold medal, it’s like something out of a textbook.”
Kevin Durant secured a place in the history books with his success. With four gold medals, he is the most successful male basketball player of all time. LeBron James was also named MVP of the tournament.
US women make history
The USA has won gold in women’s basketball for the eighth time in a row. In the final, the Americans beat France 67-66. This means that the US team is now undefeated in 61 consecutive games at the Olympics.
Player of the game was A’ja Wilson. The reigning WNBA MVP scored 21 points and was proud of her team after the game. “It’s really a dynasty that we’ve built here, it’s unbelievable,” said the 27-year-old. “And I’m so proud of the perseverance that my team showed. We could have messed it up many times, but we pulled through.”
Thanks to her success, Diana Taurasi is now the sole record holder with six gold medals and the most successful basketball player of all time. She left Sue Bird behind, who won five gold medals.
