In 2019, the same Harley-Davidson was auctioned for more than 700,000 euros. Will she beat that record this year?

The announcement had the effect of a bomb in the small world of vehicle auctions. In May, the company Mecum Auctions will organize the sale of a motorcycle that once belonged to one of rock’s greatest icons: Elvis Presley. It is more precisely the very last Harley he had bought, a Harley-Davidson FLH Bicentennial produced in 1976.

It didn’t last long in the collection of la star du rock and roll. A year following acquiring it, in 1977, Elvis Presley would indeed die of a heart attack. His Harley was then sold to the owner of a hotel in New Jersey, more for promotional and marketing purposes than for personal use.

One of rock and roll’s most iconic Harley-Davidsons

The history of this motorcycle is inseparable from that of rock and roll and Elvis Presley. Moreover, it is this prestigious past which explains why it will probably sell for an amount rarely seen for a motorcycle. Despite the reputation of Harley-Davidson, the models of the American brand are sold most often for less than 100,000 euros.

A few exceptions exist. Officially, the most expensive motorcycle ever sold at auction is a 1908 Harley-Davidson, one of the first in history. She left last February for more than 860,000 euros. Elvis Presley’s 1976 FLH Bicentennial might be sold for close. In 2019, she had already gone under the hammer for a bit more than 730,000 euros.

A collector’s motorcycle

Even if it hadn’t belonged to Elvis Presley, this Harley-Davidson would still be highly sought following. She is one of 750 models specially designed to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the United States. In itself, it is then already a collector’s vehicle. Before being sold in 2019, its second owner had already sold it in 1983 to a museumthe « Pioneer Auto Museum » of Murdo, South Dakota.

In terms of its technical characteristics, it is equipped with a 1200 cm3 engine. Its blue and black color had been specially commissioned by Elvis Presley. Mecum Auctions, which is handling the sale this year, gave no value to the bike. Given the price she had gone to in 2019, however, it can be imagined that she will reach heights. The auction is therefore to be closely monitored.
