Elon Musk’s social network X had a judicial setback. He failed to block a California state law that requires companies in that sector publicly disclose how they moderate certain content.
The platform, formerly known as Twitter, had sued California in September to repeal the content moderation law, saying the law violated their free speech rights under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and the constitution of the state of California.
The law requires social media companies with substantial annual gross revenues to issue semi-annual reports describing your content moderation practices and provide data on the number of objectionable posts and how they were addressed.
However, U.S. District Judge William Shubb, in an eight-page decision, dismissed the social media company’s request.
“While the reporting requirement appears to impose a substantial compliance burden on social media companies,or the requirement appears to be unjustified or
unduly burdensome within the context of First Amendment law“Shubb wrote.
Shubb will meet with attorneys in the case on Feb. 26 for a scheduling conference.
