Elon Musk’s Social Network X Faces Revolving Fine for Violating EU Law

Elon Musk’s social network X will soon receive an official warning from the European Commission due to the communications platform’s inability to combat the spread of illegal content that violates EU law, Bloomberg reports, citing sources familiar with the circumstances of the case.

In December last year, the European Commission announced it was launching an investigation into social network X for possible violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into force last August and was expressed in the distribution of “illegal content.” The decision to conduct the investigation was made after an investigation in October 2023.

The warning will be issued by the EU Commissioner for Internal Trade and Services, Thierry Breton, before the EU summer holidays, the sources said. If X fails to make the necessary changes in line with the European Commission’s preliminary findings, the agency could formally decide by the end of the year to impose a turnover fine of up to 6% of the company’s global revenue.

The European Commission said its investigation into X is ongoing and has no time limit. The Commission is also currently investigating Meta Platforms, AliExpress and ByteDance’s TikTok for compliance with EU law.
