Former Zip2 colleagues and former VP Jim Ambras reportedly said in a documentary that current Tesla CEO Elon Musk patrols the office at 9 p.m. to see who is working overtime. When he saw that no one was actually doing it, it was already 9pm. But he blushed and looked very angry.

Zip2 provides online city navigation and guide information for newspapers. It was founded in 1995 as “Global Link Information Network Company” and was acquired by Compaq Computer Corporation in 1999 to enhance the functionality of its AltaVista search engine. Its two founders, Elon Musk, made $22 million and Kimbal Musk $15 million.

Branden Spikes, a systems engineer at Zip2, sees Musk as a different kind of person who works all night and sleeps directly at his desk every day. He also sees Musk as an “all-knowing” person, and Musk himself thinks so.

Musk’s mother also stated in the documentary that Musk liked to read books all night as a child, and she had to help him change his clothes while he was sleeping.

Musk currently runs four companies, and in 2019 he was named the tech industry’s most charismatic leader. But he said in a December 2021 podcast that “you shouldn’t be a leader just to be a leader, you want leaders who don’t want to be leaders themselves.”
