Elon Musk to talk to Tim Cook about 30% App Store fee

Although in a more friendly tone, Elon Musk once more publicly demonstrated dissatisfaction with the current App Store guidelines — especially regarding the 30% fee charged to developers who earn over US$ 1 million per year using the store as a means of payment — which is the only possible way to offer paid services on the iOS, say.

Musk’s mention of Apple took place in the midst of an announcement that the X (formerly Twitter) will no longer charge the 10% monthly fee to creators until the amount of payments received by them reaches $100k. The free first year benefit is still valid, so even if a creator reaches the mentioned amount, the percentage will only be charged if he has been on the platform for more than a year.

But where does the Apple come into this story? Well, Musk said he’ll talk to the CEOChief executive officeror executive director.”>1 of Apple, Tim Cook, to convince him to charge the “Apple fee” only for the percentage that X earns from creators — that is, 30% of the 10%. Currently, the company receives for each effective subscription, an amount that is paid by the social network religiously, even if the creator in question does not have to pay the monthly fee.

As Musk claimed that the change would maximize creators’ earnings, it’s easy to deduce that this 30% fee is being “discounted” from what is passed on to them. It remains to be seen whether Cook will accept a generous cut in Apple revenue from X and, furthermore, whether precedents will be opened for other companies to claim something similar — as Meta has done in the past, it is worth remembering.

Rejection?

Getting back to the subject rebrandingit seems that loyal Twitter users are not very happy with the social network’s name change to X. According to TechCrunchthe market intelligence company Sensor Tower pointed out that almost 78% of the software’s evaluations in the American App Store since July 21 were from one star – a much higher percentage than the 50% of the previous weeks (which was already high).

In Brazil, at least with regard to evaluations with comments, a similar phenomenon seems to be taking shape. When viewing the page with the most recent ratings, we find comments such as “I hate this X”, “Twitter >>>>>>> X”, “X is the hell” or even “Twitter was great until the purchase by Elon Musk”. The overall rating here remains high, with an average of 4.8 stars for the app.
