Elon Musk stops Tesla plant in Mexico; here’s why

WASHINGTON.- The counselor Tesla delegate, Elon Muskannounced that it halted construction of assembly plant in Mexico “at least until the US presidential elections,” scheduled for November 5.

“I think that We have to see what happens with the election“the tycoon said in a teleconference with analysts and the media.

Why did Tesla stop its plant in Mexico?

(Republican candidate Donald) Trump said he will put tariffs on vehicles produced in Mexicoso it doesn’t make sense to invest a lot in Mexico if that’s going to happen,” he said.

Tesla previously announced the construction of a assembly plant in Mexico to produce cars from 2026.

Musk, who publicly declares his support for Trump and pledged to donate tens of millions of dollars to his campaign to help him win the presidential election, adding: “At this time we oppose Giga Mexico.”

“We need to see how things develop politically,” he continued.

Tesla builds a plant in Monterrey

Tesla began construction of the Mexico Gigafactory in Monterrey and even last February the governor of Nueva León, Samuel García, assured that the works would begin in March of this year.

The construction, announced in March 2023 by Musk and which received substantial state aid, was delayed until the end of that year because of high interest rates, Musk said at the time.

The controversial businessman also said today that Tesla is increasing its production in the factories it already has.

He added that future products, such as the robotaxi or the humanoid robot called Optimuswill be produced at the plant in Texas.
