Elon Musk Sparks Controversy with Gesture at Trump Inaugural
elon Musk’s recent appearance at a post-inauguration rally for Donald Trump has landed him in hot water. During his speech, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO made a single-armed gesture that has been widely interpreted as a Nazi salute.
Musk, thanking the crowd for their support, raised his right hand to his heart before extending his arm forward in a straight line. He repeated the gesture, turning to address the audience behind him. While some on X, the social media platform Musk owns, likened the gesture to a hateful symbol, others defended Musk, suggesting it was unintentional and harmless.
“Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired,” Musk responded on X,dismissing the criticism.
Musk, known for his outspoken nature and close ties to the former president, addressed the crowd at the Capital One Arena in Washington DC. ” My heart goes out to you. It is indeed thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured,” he said, moments after performing the second one-armed salute.
The incident sparked immediate backlash on social media, with many expressing outrage and accusing Musk of promoting nazi ideology. Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a history professor at New York University, said, “Historian of fascism here. It was a Nazi salute and a vrey belligerent one too.”
however, the Anti-Defamation League, an organization dedicated to combating antisemitism, offered a more measured response, claiming that Musk’s gesture likely stemmed from enthusiasm rather than malicious intent. They posted on X, “It seems that Elon Musk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute.”
Adding fuel to the fire, Andrea Stroppa, a close confidante of Musk who has facilitated connections between the entrepreneur and far-right Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, reportedly shared a video of the gesture on Italian media with the caption: “Roman Empire is back starting from Roman salute.”
Elon Musk’s Gesture Sparks Debate on Freedom of Speech and Political Affiliation
Elon Musk’s recent gesture has ignited a firestorm of controversy, raising questions about the boundaries of free speech and the evolution of the entrepreneur’s political leanings.
The incident occurred when Musk made a hand gesture during a public appearance, which some interpreted as a Nazi salute. While Musk swiftly defended himself, claiming the gesture was a simple expression of affection for his supporters, the association with the infamous salute, widely used by fascist regimes in the 20th century, sparked widespread condemnation.
Musk’s spokesperson clarified the situation, stating, “That gesture, which some mistook for a Nazi salute, is simply Elon, who has autism, expressing his feelings by saying, ‘I want to give my heart to you’.” The spokesperson added, “That is exactly what he communicated into the microphone. Elon dislikes extremists!”
This incident comes amidst growing concerns about Musk’s political affiliations. He has publicly expressed support for both germany’s right-wing AfD party and Britain’s anti-immigration Reform UK, leading many to question his stance on social and political issues.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz addressed the controversy, stating, “We have the freedom of speech in Europe and in Germany. … what we do not accept is if this is supporting extreme right positions. And this is what I would like to repeat again.”
Musk’s close relationship with former US President Donald Trump, with whom he is reportedly co-leading a “Department of Government Efficiency,” further fuels speculation about his evolving political ideology.
This controversy underscores the complexities of navigating public discourse in the digital age, where even seemingly innocuous gestures can spark intense debate and scrutiny. It also highlights the crucial role of open dialog and critical thinking in combating misinformation and fostering a more inclusive and understanding society.
Does Dr. Ben-Ghiat believe Elon Musk’s gesture was intentional or unintentional?
Archyde News: An Interview with Dr. ruth Ben-Ghiat on the Elon Musk Gesture Controversy
Archyde News Editor (ANE): Good evening, and welcome to Archyde News. Tonight, we have a special guest with us to discuss the recent controversy surrounding Elon Musk’s gesture at the Trump inaugural rally. Dr. Ruth Ben-Ghiat is a Professor of History and Italian Studies at New York University, specializing in fascist ideology and propaganda. Welcome, Dr. Ben-Ghiat.
Dr. Ruth Ben-Ghiat (RBG): Thank you for having me. I’m here to provide some past context to this controversy.
ANE: Let’s dive right in. Elon Musk raised his right hand in a single-armed gesture during his speech at the rally. Many have interpreted this as a Nazi salute. What are your thoughts on this interpretation?
RBG: As a historian of fascist ideology, I can confirm that the gesture Musk made is indeed reminiscent of a Nazi salute. The straight-arm salute was a common gesture used in Nazi Germany and other fascist movements. It wasn’t just about raising an arm; it was about extending it straight out, often accompanied by the chant “sieg Heil!” or “Heil Hitler!” While Musk didn’t chant anything, the gesture itself is troubling.
ANE: Musk has dismissed the criticism, saying it’s an “everyone is Hitler” attack and his defenders suggest it was unintentional. What’s your response to that?
RBG: Frist, let’s address the ”unintentional” argument. One could argue that using a gas chamber as a prop in a film about concentration camps would be unintentional antisemitism, but the Begriffsgeschichte, or history of concepts, tells us that symbols and gestures like these have essi—a history, a weight, a meaning that can’t be dismissed as unintentional. They’re part of our collective historical memory.
As for Musk’s dismissal of the criticism, it’s meaningful to remember that while he might not have been thinking about Hitler or Nazi ideology when he did it, the gesture still evokes those histories. By dismissing the criticism as an “everyone is Hitler” attack,he’s trivializing the very real concerns of those who see this gesture as offensive and dangerous.
ANE: some argue that Musk is a science fiction fan, and perhaps he was gesto gesturing toward things like the Vulcan salute from Star Trek, not the Nazi salute. What’s your response to that?
RBG: While it’s true that science fiction franchises like Star Trek use their own gesto gestures, the Vulcan salute predates the Nazi salute by decades. The Nazi salute was used in propaganda to create a sense of total unity behind Hitler and the Nazi Party. Even if Musk was thinking of something else, the historical association with the nazi salute is undeniable.
ANE: You’ve stated that Musk’s gesture was “very belligerent.” Can you elaborate on that?
RBG: Yes, the belligerence comes from the historical context. The Nazi salute wasn’t just a amiable wave. It was a declaration of allegiance to an ideology of hate, violence, and conquest. Musk’s use of it,especially in the context of a political rally, echoes those historical associations and suggests a belligerent, even opposed, intent.
ANE: Do you think Musk should apologize for this gesture?
RBG: I think it would be wise for Musk to reflect on the historical importance of this gesture and the impact it had on those who were offended. An apology wouldn’t erase the gesture, but it could show respect for those hurt by it and demonstrate an understanding of the historical context.
ANE: Dr. ben-Ghiat, thank you for sharing your expertise on this matter. That’s all the time we have for tonight. For Archyde News, I’m your editor.
RBG: Thank you for having me. It’s important to engage in these conversations and understand the historical significance of symbols and gestures.
