Now, in ‘Will Tell’, the historical drama about William Tell, the British actress plays another princess, although very different from the one on Disney+.
In ‘Will Tell’, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which ends this Sunday, Bamber plays Princess Bertha, a deeply ethical character who struggles between maintaining her loyalty to the Austrian crown and fighting for Swiss independence.
Although the film, directed by Nick Hamm and starring Claes Bang, Connor Swindells, Golshifteh Farahani and Ben Kingsley among others, tells the legend of William Tell, the hero who freed the Swiss from the Austrian Empire in the 14th century, Princess Bertha is perhaps the most central character to the idea of resistance that the film conveys.
In an interview with EFE, Bamber described her character as “a freedom fighter.”
“She realises that she is not going to be taken seriously, not by her uncle and not by the court at the castle, and that they are essentially just going to use her for marriage. And that is all they expect from her. She has Austrian blood, she has Swiss blood. And she joins the fight with the Swiss and obviously goes on a journey with William Tell,” he explained.
“She is incredibly determined and feisty and plays all men on their own turf, manipulating them and sometimes using them, while at the same time being in love,” the 27-year-old actress added.
He describes Bertha as “progressive and very quick-witted,” always ahead of the rest, with a “very political mindset,” something he considers was very “educational.”
Bamber recalled growing up watching movies like ‘Will Tell,’ epic historical dramas.
“It was something that my grandfather really loved. He would always put on these epic movies and we would watch them together. So that was something that I definitely grew up with as well. And I had never experienced being on a set like ‘Will Tell’ before,” she said.
She, along with the rest of the actors, had to spend time training in swordplay or horse riding.
“We had swords, daggers… I even learned how to shoot a crossbow. I don’t do it in the movie, but it’s a good idea to know how to do it. I don’t think I could hit the apple though,” he joked.
“I had a great time doing that. Honestly, it was a lot of fun,” he added.
A variety of characters has characterised Bamber’s career in recent years. ‘The Show’ (2020) is a fantasy film; in ‘The Sniper’s Daughter’ (2020) she plays the daughter of a former Irish IRA terrorist; in ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ (2023) she is also a princess, but from the 21st century.
“Being able to wake up one week playing Kate Moss and the next week be doing something like ‘Animal Friends’ (a film that will be released in 2025) or another week be doing something like ‘Will Tell’ is a luxury. Those different roles are exciting because they are a new challenge,” she said.
“I have to approach them in a different way, whether it’s comedy, thriller or drama. And I want to keep pushing myself to try new things and explore them,” he concluded.
