This Wednesday morning, Elio Di Rupo (PS) gave a speech at the General Assembly of the Union of Towns and Municipalities of Wallonia.
In his speech, the Walloon Minister-President mentioned a potential return of the coronavirus epidemic following the summer. He was particularly concerned regarding the economic consequences that this recovery might entail.
“If the pandemic resurfaces with either variant, there will be two options, and not one more“, began the socialist. “Either self-isolate completely or get vaccinated. Because the Region will no longer be able to finance inactivity“.
Elio Di Rupo indeed recalled that Wallonia had spent 3 billion euros to support the sectors that have fallen victim to the health crisis over the past two years. New financial compensation is therefore difficult to envisage for the Region, whose budget is very tight.
“That’s what needs to change”
The words of the former mayor of Mons provoked strong reactions in the ranks of the opposition. “What the Walloon government had to finance was above all the consequences of your austerity policy in terms of health care“, in particular deplored the deputy of the PTB, Germain Mugemangango. “With a bloodless first line, it was obviously impossible to cope despite the heroic work of the caregivers. That’s what needs to change.r”, concluded the far-left MP.
