Former slugger Eliézer Alfonzo was announced this Friday, September 13, as the new hitting coach for the Leones del Caracas, for the 2024/2025 season of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP).
Alfonzo, the leading home run hitter in the history of the national paid circuit with 138 home runs, will take over the position that was originally held by Carlos “Beto” Méndez, but due to family circumstances he will not be able to attend. At least that is what the press department of the team reported.
“El Matatán” began his career as a coach last season, when he was an assistant hitting coach for Caribes de Anzoátegui. During the 2024 Major League Professional Baseball (LMBP) campaign, he also served as a hitting coach for Senadores de Caracas, the team that won the national summer baseball championship.

According to the press release, Alfonzo thanked the capital team’s top brass for the opportunity he received and stressed that he will be able to be alongside his son Eliézer Alfonzo Jr., who debuted in Venezuela in the previous competition and is expected to see action in the next one.
