Elevator of Chaos: Unraveling the Blaze of Deception

The 15-year-old boy with the initials M did not take the initiative alone when he vandalized the lift of the Jalan Pemuda Crossing Bridge (JPO), Surabaya, causing it to catch fire. Apparently, he was ruled by an adult with the initials A.

Dinar Aisyah, Public Relations of Warna Warni Media, as the manager of the JPO, explained that his party was able to reveal this fact because they had time to interrogate M when internal security officers arrested him, on Saturday (5/10/2024) evening, at around 21.00 WIB.

“This minor said that he was ordered and the adults ordered him to,” said Dinar at a press conference at the Kominfo Building, former Surabaya City Government Public Relations, Tuesday (8/10/2024) afternoon.

Apart from interrogating him, the management also found that the 15 year old boy was carrying three platinum private bank ATM cards, a family card, a wire and cigarettes.

Dinar admitted that he was surprised by the alleged perpetrator’s belongings, which had three platinum type ATM cards. Because according to Bank Indonesia regulations, prospective customers must have an ID card, while the requirement for having an ID card is that you must be 17 years old.

“How could there be three platinum type ATM cards in a child’s wallet,” he said.

Even so, the JPO management was reluctant to give conclusions regarding the perpetrator’s alleged motive. Dinar said that this case had been handed over to the Genteng Police.

“We fully entrust the Genteng Police to reveal immediately who was the mastermind behind this series of crimes,” he said.

Reported suarasurabaya.net, Warna Warni Media, the manager of the pedestrian bridge (JPO) on Jalan Pemuda, Surabaya, said that the JPO elevator fire last Saturday was apparently caused by damage by a boy with the initials M (15 years).

The management discovered the cause after carrying out an independent investigation based on CCTV footage and technical checks.

Dinar Aisyah, Public Relations of Warna Warni Media, stated that the cause of the JPO elevator fire on Jalan Pemuda on the Delta Plaza Surabaya side was not due to an electrical short circuit as previously reported.

“It is very unfortunate that minors are suspected of carrying out premeditated actions by damaging the lift control panel,” said Dinar.

The results of the investigation stated that M was suspected of destroying the elevator by attaching a wire to the elevator, blocking the elevator door and burning cigarette packets inside the elevator control panel.

“Because of this series of actions, it resulted in the burning of the Youth JPO lift on the Delta Plaza side,” he said.

Dinar explained that the alleged perpetrator started his action on Saturday (5/10/2024) morning at around 06.00 WIB. From CCTV footage, the 15 year old boy was seen going back and forth in the elevator and inserting an object into the elevator path.

Not long after 5-10 minutes after the perpetrator carried out a series of vandalism, the JPO lift caught fire and the fire spread to part of the bridge.

Then in the evening at around 20.48 WIB, the perpetrator was seen on CCTV returning to the JPO location carrying the equipment used to damage the JPO lift opposite, precisely in front of the RRI Office.

However, the perpetrator’s actions failed to cause a fire for the second time. The officers, who were already suspicious of the boy, immediately arrested him.

The 15 year old boy was immediately taken to the police station for further investigation. Kompol Bayu Halim Genteng Police Chief said that his party had handled this case. The investigation process is focused on CCTV footage.

“We are still following up, because we have contacted forensics and inafis. Our evidence focus is on crime scene processing, in essence we are trying to confirm the CCTV examination to follow up on possible causes and inafis has also moved. “We’ll wait and see what the results will be,” he said.
