Elevated Stations of Mexico City Subway Line 12 Set to Reopen on July 15 After Deadly Collapse

The reopening of 5 elevated stations of the Subway Line 12 agreed for July 9, was delayed a week and now the date of July 15 has been set, reported this Friday the Government of the Mexico City.

On May 3, 2021, an elevated section of Line 12 collapsed, leaving 26 dead and more than 100 injured.

In a statement, the Ministry of Works and Services (Sobse) and the Metro Collective Transportation System (STC) reported that “the resumption of service” of the stations Culhuacán, San Andrés Tomatlán, Lomas Estrella, Calle 11 and Periférico Oriente “It will be held next Saturday, July 15.”

Both agencies requested the understanding of the users who live and travel in the areas surrounding the aforementioned stations.

In addition, they expressed their commitment so that “the reopening complies with all the protocols that are required.”

On June 22, the Government of the Mexican capital had warned that the five stations totaled 6.5 kilometers. The head of Sobse, Jesús Antonio Esteva, announced that, “after completing the preoperative tests, as of July 9, the elevated section will be put into operation in five stations“.

Thus, the metro line 12 service will go from Mixcoac to Periférico Oriente, which will benefit 271 thousand users. With these five destinations, there will be 14 that will be operating out of a total of 20 stations.

On June 13, the metro announced that the static load tests had already begun.

On May 3, two years after the collapse, the Attorney General’s Office reported that had signed 117 reparation agreements with direct and indirect victims.

On January 15, after 20 months, line 12 of the Mexico City subway reopened, partially, after closing due to the collapse two years ago.

The reopened section is underground and spans nine seasons, from Mixcoac to Atlalilco, with an extension of 11.8 kilometers and covers the transfer of some 175 thousand people a day. (EFE)
