Elegance Is An Attitude… To Shit On.

Founded in 2018, played three concerts, everything was already sealed: For desolate Things got off to a bad start, but the Viennese trio remained productive even in lockdown. Two EPs between Sludge, Noise, Crust, Hardcore and Death Metal have been released so far, now it’s time for the album format. „Elegance Is An Attitude… To Shit On.“ does not mince his words and lashes out with enviable precision.

Not only that, you always let yourself be carried away by complex hussar rides. “Rollercoaster: Confusion Is Stable, Confidence Is Luck” (song titles are one of the trio’s specialities) takes seven minutes and covers large parts of the work. Tough sludge, roasting walls of noise, but also a little crusted uptempo dirt with a deadly substructure are mixed in here. The way the track changes from furious salvos to a tricky groove at half-time and at times takes on an almost doomy tempo is absolutely entertaining.

The fact that “Deaf, Dumb, Blind & Grumpy” picks up the pace a bit and unleashes frontal malice on the drooling masses goes well with the picture. Rancid sludgecore marches on with distorted intensity and doesn’t let itself be lured out of its reserve. The opening title track also digs your finger deep into suppurating wounds and pushes the heaviness into almost unbearable realms. “Thanks, But No Thanks” also scores with clumsiness, and also adds suspended, infernal melodies – used very sparingly and maybe that’s why it’s so good. Hoarse growls erupt at the end and let social decay rattle through thick clouds of fog.

Repulsive ugliness is booming at desolat and offers high entertainment value. That may sound like a contradiction in terms, but in the end it underscores the band’s special, rancid, worn-out, uncomfortable charm. After two entertaining EPs, “Elegance Is An Attitude… To Shit On.” packs everything desolately entertaining and disturbing onto one mighty record. With the middle finger extended and a sympathetic attitude of refusal, the gentlemen from the capital deliver a repulsive treat in the best sense of the word.
