Electroporation: The Game-Changing Technique for Treating Heart Rhythm Disorders

2023-09-24 04:00:00

On the occasion of Heart Week, organized by the French Federation of Cardiology, the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL) are highlighting the latest technique used by its hospitals to treat heart rhythm disorders: electroporation.

Electroporation ablation “consists of producing high-voltage electrical waves in a few milliseconds, to irreversibly open nanoscale pores in the membranes of targeted cardiac cells, resulting in their destruction,” explains Dr. Samir Fareh, rhythmologist at Croix Rousse hospital, in a press release.

A less restrictive technique

This technique is used for people suffering from atrial fibrillation – 750,000 in France, a pathology which manifests itself by irregular and often rapid contractions of the heart and alters the quality of life of the patients concerned.

When medications are not enough, patients are subjected to radiofrequency or cryotherapy, methods which work but which are more time-consuming, more tiring and have more serious side effects than electrical waves, particularly on the tissues surrounding the heart.

Electroporation has been practiced since February 2023 by HCL. In France, only around twenty hospitals have used it since the start of the year.

Heart Week takes place from September 26 to 29. On this occasion, the HCL is organizing screening and initiation workshops for emergency procedures in the Edouard-Herriot and Croix Rousse hospitals. Information on www.chu-lyon.fr/nouvelle-du-coeur-ateliers-et-depistages
