Electronic banking: Good recovery in the 1st half

Good growth in electronic payment activity in the first half. According to data from the Interbank Electronic Payment Center (CMI), the overall volume of activity is up “remarkably” compared to the same period of 2021, with a 16% increase in the number of transactions and 13 .2% of the total amount. This good recovery can be explained, in part, by the dynamic activity of foreign cards.

Indeed, foreign card activity more than doubled over the period with an increase of 106.2% in transactions and 112.4% in amounts compared to the same period of 2021. In total, the number of bank cards issued by Moroccan issuers reached 18.6 million cards in circulation, including already more than 12.7 million with the “contactless” functionality.

The domestic activity of Moroccan cards has experienced growth of 14.2% in number of operations and 10.4% in total amount. Payments (+27% in number and +18.7% in amount) remain more dynamic than withdrawals (+10.5% in number and +9.4% in amount).
