Electromobility in Luxembourg: The State had to find a new supplier for the “SuperChargy” terminals

PONTPIERRE – Three first public ultra-fast charging stations, supplied by the company Kempower, were inaugurated on Tuesday. The state says it had problems with the previous supplier.

“The deployment of 90 SuperChargy terminals, by 2024, can continue as planned”, assures the Ministry of Mobility. Following “delays in the supply chain and major supply problems”, the State is working with a new supplier for the deployment of public ultra-fast charging stations. It no longer uses the Portuguese company Efacec but the Finnish company Kempower.

This Tuesday, Francois Bausch, the Minister of Mobility and Claude Turmes, the Minister of Energy, inaugurated the first three SuperChargy terminals of the Kempower brand, at the TotalEnergies station, on the A4 in Pontpierre (in the direction of Esch -sur-Alzette). “Eventually, two-thirds of the terminals will be from Kempower and one-third from Efacec”, specifies Alex Michels.

The SuperChargy project manager at Creos Luxembourg explains that the new terminals bring several advantages to users: a longer and more manageable charging cable, a maximum power of 400 kW for each charging point, an interface with QR code illustrating the curve of real-time charging on the user’s mobile phone, or a smaller floor area used.

“There are two ways to use a SuperChargy station”

The SuperChargy project started in 2020. The first terminals had been inaugurated in 2021. The amount of the investment per terminal is around 100,000 euros. By next year, the 90 terminals will be spread over 18 stations and service areas on the motorways and on the other main axes of Luxembourg. The next service areas to be able to benefit from additional fast charging stations in 2023 are located in Wasserbillig, Hosingen, Schwebach-Pont, Micheville, Lorentzweiler and Remich.

“There are two ways to use a SuperChargy terminal, recalls Alex Michels, with a card from a charging service provider or with a bank card. If you want to charge the battery up to 80%, it takes between 15 and 20 minutes. Between 80 and 100%, it lasts longer. The charge price depends on the service provider. It is in any case more expensive than the Chargy terminals”.

More than 3,000 charging stations accessible to the public

For his part, François Bausch took advantage of this inauguration to emphasize that Luxembourg had the 2nd densest electric charging network in the European Union. “Only the Netherlands are doing better than us,” he adds.

The Grand Duchy now has more than 3,000 charging stations accessible to the public. “The public network must include not only the terminals installed in service stations, whether or not they are financed by the State (1,500 Chargy terminals and 35 to 40 SuperChargy) and the terminals installed in other locations accessible to the public, like supermarket car parks,” he says.

Assistance for individuals and businesses

At the same time, 30,000 electric cars are now registered in Luxembourg. In the first quarter, nearly one in five new cars sold was 100% electric. As a reminder, a resident can obtain a maximum bonus of 8,000 euros for the purchase of an electric car, until the end of 2024.

In addition, it is possible to obtain financial aid (the amounts of the bonus vary) for the installation of a charging station at home, until June 30. 2,159 bonuses of this type have been granted until December 2022, notes the Ministry of Mobility.

An aid scheme also exists for companies, since July 2022. A call for projects was launched last year, making it possible to subsidize 800 to 900 terminals, indicate the authorities. A new call for tenders took place this year.
