The fuel efficiency of new and late-model cars in the U.S. has improved 11.2 percent since 2019, reflecting the downsizing of internal combustion engines and the rising share of hybrid and electric vehicle market.
But not all regions contribute equally, with some states showing much greater MPG improvement than others.
The latest study from the site iSeeCars analyzed more than 19 million cars and found that Arkansas had the largest improvements in fuel efficiency and hybrid/EV market share, surpassing both California and Washington.
But South Carolina, Rhode Island and North Dakota had the worst improvements in MPG, lowering the national average.
Here are the top 5 states with the best MPG (miles per gallon) improvement over the last five years:

“States like California and Washington are known for their efforts to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, so it’s not surprising to see them in a good position in this area,” said Karl Brauer, executive analyst at the site iSeeCars.
“But seeing Arkansas outperform both states in the areas of increasing fuel efficiency and growing hybrid and electric vehicle market share was something we couldn’t have predicted.
“Arkansas ranks among the top five growth states in the hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle categories, showing rapid adoption across a broad spectrum of fuel-efficient vehicle types.”
