Electrification paves the way to decarbonize industry

A study carried out by the consultancy Heatable revealed the industries that most pollute the environment in 2023. Among them are the sectors of fuel, energy, agriculture, fashion, food, civil construction and transport. In this context, the current challenge is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the segment and combat climate change.

To control these negative effects, it is necessary to find the best direction for industrial decarbonization, which includes reducing the amount of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases emitted into the atmosphere.

One of the solutions already found for the path of sustainability is the use of electrification together with digitalization. There are several strategies and technologies that can be used to reduce CO2 emissions.

On the demand side: Energy efficiency

For Schneider Electric’s VP Industrial Automation and Head of Digitalization, Regis Ataídes, with more efficient technologies, such as high-performance electric motors, efficient lighting systems and adequate thermal insulation, it is possible to improve the energy efficiency of industrial processes. The so-called smart factories (smart factories) have automation systems that allow precise control and monitoring of the energy consumed throughout the process, including making decisions in real time, according to data and artificial intelligence.

“Digitalization is essential for energy efficiency and saving energy. The solutions already exist and can be implemented immediately, with very scalable costs”, he adds.

On the supply side: Renewable energy and cleaner production

“In Brazil, in 2022 the production of energy from renewable sources (hydroelectric, biomass, wind, solar), according to research by Electric Energy Trading Chamber (CCEE) hit the 92% milestone. We have one of the ‘cleanest’ energy matrices in the world”, explains Regis.

With this, the industry can benefit, seeking the transition to renewable energy sources. Investing in clean energy sources significantly reduces emissions.

The optimization of industrial processes can lead to cleaner and more sustainable production. The loss of energy in industrial processes is still too great. Integrated digitalization and automation solutions can help achieve sustainability and emissions reductions.

Electrification

“Replacing fossil fuels with electricity is another strategy that can be used. The electrification of processes that are currently dependent on fossil fuels, such as heating, cooling and transport, can be achieved through the adoption of electrical technologies, such as heat pumps, electric vehicles and electrical equipment”, he points out.

Therefore, electrification reduces air pollution from the combustion of fossil fuels.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS)

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has emerged as a tool capable of mitigating the impacts of carbon emissions. carbon dioxide already atmosphere coming from fossil fuels and industrial. In this process, it can capture up to 90% of the releases of this produced gas. This prevents CO2 from being released into the atmosphere, thus reducing impacts.

“There is no magic or very short-term solution. Engagement of all agents involved throughout the value chain is required. The planet provides the necessary resources for our evolution. It is essential that governments, industries and civil society unite and work together to create incentive policies, promote investments in technologies and raise awareness of the great importance that decarbonization has for a more sustainable future on the planet”, concludes the executive.
