Electricity: The official announcements are coming
 2024-03-02 13:56:35

Although the official announcements for March electricity tariffs will be made in the coming days, all indications are that there will be serious positive surprises for both green and yellow tariffs.

It is indicative that a megawatt hour now costs below 75 euros (i.e. 0.075 €/kWh) when, in the midst of the crisis, it had even climbed to 436 euros (0.436 €/kWh), i.e. it records a drop of 82%.

In March, retail electricity prices are expected to drop to even lower levels.

The green tariff of the main provider is set at 9.2 cents, while the yellow tariffs for March will start from 8 cents per kilowatt hour.

If the companies do not change their discount policy for the month of March, then it is estimated that a significant number of green tariffs will have a cheaper price than the cheapest tariff in February which was 11.798 cents/KWh.

A “scissor” in price is also expected to occur for yellow exante tariffs, which may move below 10 cents/KWh between 8 and 9 cents/KWh.

Be that as it may, the de-escalation of the wholesale price, which occurred as a result of the new decline in the price of natural gas, the low demand but also the increased production of RES, is expected to positively affect the electricity prices for the month of March.

The “signal” for the new lower prices in the invoices will be given with the announcement of the green invoice for the month of March, which will be done on the 1st of the month as all supply companies are obliged to do.

March, in this light, is expected to move lower than February and on tariffs of all colors, with the outlook showing that this trend will continue.

For yellow invoices it should be noted that we have two categories:

The exante those whose price is determined at the beginning of the month and does not decrease if the price eventually moves lower in the wholesale market, and expost those whose price is determined based on the course of the wholesale price and are essentially costplus, i.e. the cost of the price energy plus a reasonable profit

And it may be that this category of floating tariffs is very reminiscent of the old tariffs with a readjustment clause, which “burned” consumers when wholesale prices rose sharply, only this time the picture is completely different.

Today wholesale prices are in a downward channel and this turns current period adjustment clauses into an “ally” of consumers as they drag charges lower.

Full speed ahead for a new color, mixed electricity tariff, following the “war” between the Energy Regulatory Authority (RAE) and providers for new offers, but also the recent reports of the Minister of Energy, Mr. Skylakakis, that the electricity supply code, ” it was not written in stone.”

A few days ago, an issue of unfair competition arose, when a company gave a kilowatt-hour price of 12.3 euro cents, which it “locked” for eight months, while for the remaining four months, it gave a floating interest rate.

The Energy Regulatory Authority, in turn, stated that this is not provided for by the electricity supply regulation and cannot be a mixed tariff. For some time the price is “locked” and for the rest it fluctuates. Since the fixed tariffs, the blue ones must have the price fixed for at least 12 months.

According to the energy inspector, Michalis Christodoulidis, the new reference to the matter by Mr. Skylakakis, that “the electricity supply code was not written in stone”, leads to a change in the relevant article, so that mixed invoices.

According to Mr. Christodoulidis, the establishment of a mixed tariff is therefore expected, which may be colored separately, or included in one of the existing colors of tariffs, perhaps the yellow tariff.
