How did the price of electricity decrease?
In August last year, electricity rates were hiked in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, prompting protests in 10 districts of the state called by the Joint People’s Action Committee, which lasted for nearly a year.
During the protest movement, innumerable demonstrations, rallies and sit-ins were held in at least ten districts and there were several clashes between the police and the protesters, in which at least four people were reported to have lost their lives.
After this protest, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mian Shahbaz Sharif, announced a package of 23 billion rupees for subsidy on electricity and flour for Pakistan-administered Kashmir on May 13, 2024.
Almost two months after the same announcement by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, on July 4, 2024, the Department of Services and General Administration of the state government issued a notification of reduction in electricity rates, in the light of which the electricity bills for the current month have been adjusted according to the new rates. .
How much did electricity consumers benefit?
Independent Urdu tried to estimate the benefit to consumers by keeping in view the difference between the old and new electricity rates.

In Pakistan-administered Kashmir, earlier electricity rates including taxes under various slabs and protected and non-protected modes were around Rs 21 to Rs 47 per unit for domestic consumers, which has come down to just Rs 3 as per the new rates. Which does not include any additional tax.
Similarly, electricity for commercial consumers used to be supplied at around Rs 60 to Rs 72 per watt inclusive of taxes, which has now come down to just Rs 10.
According to this rate, the cost of 100 unit domestic electricity bill of a normal house which used to be 4700 rupees in the past will now be reduced to only 300 rupees.
Different slabs have also been made in the new electricity prices, in which the domestic consumption of 100 units will be charged at Rs.3, for 200 units at Rs.5 and for consumption above 200 units at Rs.6 per unit.
Similarly, commercial consumers will have to pay Rs 10 per unit for 200 units and Rs 15 per unit for consumption above that.
Arrears due to customers
In August 2023, after the electricity prices were increased in Kashmir, the public did not pay their electricity bills in protest until then. Such customers are being provided a facility of payment in 12 installments to pay the arrears.
