Electricity Price Explosion: French Consumers Face Another Increase from August 1, 2023

2023-07-29 14:09:00

Very bad news for all French people! The price of electricity will explode once more from August 1, 2023!

While electricity experienced a 15% increase in February 2023know that a new price increase is planned from August 1, 2023. We tell you more!

Another increase in 2023!

Electricity becomes a luxury! In France, its price continues to explode, even if it means putting French people in delicate situations. There has already been a first increase of 15%, following 4% in February 2022. So many bakers have had to go out of business due to rising bills.

What make all the French angry. Because many people have to make concessions to try to make ends meet. So Bruno Le Maire has decided to install the tariff shield to lock in natural gas selling prices.

There is even an extension of the shield to limit the impact of soaring energy prices. And this, until 2025. The Minister of the Economy makes the promise:

« I give us two years. By 2025, to exit the electricity shield. On electricity, prices have not yet fully returned to normal. Everyone knows that EDF’s production remains a little below what we might expect ».

Unfortunately, electricity is still just as expensive… and bad news for the French, its price will go up even more! And for good reason ! There is indeed a 10% increase in prices electricity regulations as of August 1.

On August 1, 2023, there should therefore be a 10% price increase. Then +17% in 2024. And +17% in January 2025. On July 13, Gabriel Attal announced that the government would “gradually” end the tariff shield on electricity prices by the end of the year 2024.

More than 160 euros for an average consumer!

In February 2022, the price shield made it possible to limit the increase in electricity prices to 4%. But the 110 billion euros between 2021 and 2023 force him government to put END. According to the president of the Energy Regulation Commission (CRE), the situation is therefore very delicate.

She explains that without the shield, electricity prices would have increased by 75%. which would have been extremely difficult for the French.

One thing is certain, this 10% increase will have a new impact on household bills. Know that a person consuming 7,000 kWh of electricity each year, will pay 160 euros more. It is enormous !

According to data from our colleagues at Data.gouv, the price of electricity for 1 kWh was 0.2062 euros last February. But with the increase on August 1, the tariff will therefore reach 0.2268 euros per kWh.

But what is the reason why the price of electricity is so expensive? Before the war in Ukraine, it cost between 50 and 70 euros per MWh. Against 90 to 200 euros per MWh today.

Another reason, the Arenh (regulated access to historical nuclear electricity) will disappear. This principle allowing suppliers to have production at an attractive price will no longer exist at the end of 2025. So the State wants to install a new mechanism displaying prices at less than 60 euros per MWh.

The aim is therefore to enable EDF to invest in its power plants. EDF CEO Luc Rémont explains that “The operator must therefore move to a level of 25 billion euros of investment per year, 80% of which will be devoted to France. »
