Electricity and gas bills reach record highs in Flanders

The electricity and gas bill of an average Flemish family reached an all-time high in April. The VAT cut the government implemented to temper rising energy costs has already been completely reversed, figures from Flemish energy regulator VREG show. People who take out an electricity contract in April will see their annual bill rise to 1,708 euros on average, a new record. Those who take out a contract for natural gas in April will pay 3,659 euros per year, which is also an all-time high.

This means that the reduction in VAT from 21% to 6% for electricity and natural gas, decided by the government, is no longer noticeable. In the case of natural gas, the reduction has not even been felt: even taking into account the reduction in VAT in April, the bill is at an all-time high. Without the VAT reduction, the bill would of course be even higher.
