The quarter of 2023 was a record for the electric and hybrid vehicle market in Brazil. The increase was 51% compared to the same period of 2022. In the first four months of the year, more than 19,000 light electrified vehicles were sold. The data, released by the Brazilian Association of Electric Vehicles (ABVE), which considered the results important for the electromobility market in Brazil, confirm the heating up of the sector and increasingly signal greater consumer confidence in the purchase of rechargeable electric vehicles.
According to ABVE, the total data considers plug-in light vehicles (BEV and PHEV), which can be recharged using an external connector, and non-plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), including cars, light commercial vehicles, SUVs and SUVs.
Market growth also generates the need for greater charging infrastructure throughout Brazil, since electric vehicles are not refueled at common stations. The number of existing charging stations has grown, and the trend is to increase more and more in the coming years. According to ABVE, until the end of last year the country had approximately 2,950 charging stations public and semi-public, but which, it is worth mentioning, are not capable of generating fast or ultra-fast recharge. This survey by the association also shows that the prospects for the sector are that by 2025 there will be around 10,000 electrostations in Brazil.
The problem of lack of charging infrastructure is not exclusive to Brazil, it also happens in countries considered more developed or developing, especially in the centers of large cities.
Faced with this growing demand, more and more investments have been made in research and development for charging infrastructure. One example is the Edson Mororó Moura Institute of Technology (ITEMM), a partner of Teclas Moura and one of the pioneers in studies on charging stations. “Today, there are already several companies preparing and taking charging processes linked to storage systems to the market. These batteries can be recharged during the night, when the tariff is cheaper, or even through renewable energy, placing photovoltaic panels in the structure of the charging station, for example”, comments the executive director of ITEMM, Spartacus Pedrosa.
Trend
There is currently no commercial production of lithium cells in Brazil, although the largest reserves of this mineral are in Latin America. There is, for the market, the assembly of batteries with cells imported from Asia. As this is a developing market, the conditions for this production will come with the natural growth of the electric segment.
In addition, national production will be determined by the level of competitiveness of suppliers, in which Brazil is able to nationalize a large part of a battery’s content. Another important aspect for this nationalization is what has already been happening with the investment of other companies to start extracting the ore.
