Electric scooter injuries as serious as those on a motorcycle

The electric scooter is often considered dangerous. But the accident risks are similar to cycling or motorcycling according to a study.

In large cities, alternatives to the car are recommended to limit the environmental impact. If two-wheelers such as bicycles and motorcycles are common, a new mode of transport is very popular: the electric scooter. Offered for rent, it can also be purchased by individuals. But if it offers good autonomy, it can become dangerousespecially in case of bad behavior.

Regularly, the media report the facts and accidents related to the use of this motorized two-wheeler. But is the electric scooter really more dangerous than the bicycle or the motorcycle? According to a recent study conducted by the APHP and published on their website, this is not the case.

In effect, the machine would cause more serious injuries and accidents than with other two-wheelers. But the risks of use would be similar.

Trauma as important on a motorcycle or bicycle as on an electric scooter

To reach this conclusion, the researchers studied in detail road accidents involving two-wheelers over 3 years. The period was from January 1, 2019 to December 20, 2022. In total, this represented 5,233 patients. The researchers then classified the patients according to several criteria: severity of the accident, type of device used, blood alcohol level, etc.

However, it appears that the accidents that occurred on electric scooters were as serious as those on motorcycles or bicycles. In addition, speed is not an aggravating factor because some accidents remained very serious even if the users were driving slower.

The numbers indicate thatin the space of 4 years, the number of people admitted to hospital following an electric scooter accident has tripled. Nevertheless, if the accidents are as important in both cases, bad behavior and lack of safety multiply the risks.

The absence of a helmet often implicated in serious injuries on two-wheelers

The study thus reveals that users are more likely to suffer head trauma while riding an electric scooter. This also applies to machines such as Segways or hoverboards. However, this type of accident might be reduced if users wore a headset. Indeed, they remain rare, whether in child or adult users.

Another point highlighted by the study is that the fact that many accidents occur in the evening or during the weekend. Alcoholic users use this mode of transport to return home. However, attention span and balance are impaired by alcohol.

In addition, some users do not respect the highway code, which increases the risk of accidents.
