The first results of new car sales in 2021 appear, and interesting statistics come from Norway. The market itself is small: 176,276 new cars were sold. But, firstly, this is immediately 25% more than in 2020, although most world markets have now sagged due to a shortage of cars. And secondly, this is a new absolute record for Norway. Moreover, the previous one was installed back in 1986: then 167352 cars were sold.
Thanks to tax legislation in Norway, the share of electric vehicles is growing from year to year. And if in the year before last they accounted for 54.3% of demand, then in 2021 battery models occupied 64.5% of the Norwegian market: 113,715 electric vehicles were sold. The local bestseller in 2020 was the Audi e-tron crossover, but in 2021 the Tesla Model 3 sedan took the lead with 12,058 copies.
The second place in the sales ranking is occupied by the Toyota RAV4 PHEV rechargeable hybrid (8928 cars). And this is the only model with an internal combustion engine in the top ten: the electric Volkswagen ID.4 is in third place, followed by Tesla Model Y, Volvo XC40 Recharge, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Audi e-tron, Skoda Enyaq iV, Nissan Leaf and Polestar 2.
Tesla also took the first place in the rating of brands: 20397 cars were sold (11.5% of the total market). Behind it are Volkswagen (16926), Toyota (15807), Volvo (13707), BMW (11119), Audi (10355), Skoda (9856), Ford (9400), Mercedes-Benz (9001) and Hyundai (8667). Sales of Chinese electric vehicles are still vanishingly small.
Rechargeable hybrids in Norway account for 20.8% of the new car market. Conventional hybrids in 2021 accounted for 5.5%, gasoline cars – 4.2%, diesel cars – 4%, and another 0.9% – for a small number of diesel hybrids. Recall that Norway intends to completely ban the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles in 2025. Judging by the latest statistics, this ban will not hit the market hard.
