Electric car charging time reduced to five minutes

The specialists were able to reduce the charging time by using the chemical element niobium, which was used to create a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 35 kilowatt-hours. During tests, the engineers managed to charge the battery from 10 to 80 percent in just 4.5 minutes.

“Our extensive research here in the UK and US has uncovered new battery technology that is ready and scalable right now,” said Nyobolt co-founder and CEO Sai Shivareddy. The batteries for electric vehicles were developed with the help of scientists from the University of Cambridge in the UK.

Independent testing has proven that the new battery can withstand more than 4,000 fast-charge cycles while retaining 80 percent of its capacity. That’s equivalent to a range of 965,000 kilometers.

According to William Kephart, a specialist at P3 Group, it will be difficult to scale up the production of such batteries. Kephart also noted that the most important element in Nyobolt batteries, niobium, is mined in volumes of 94.5 thousand tons, while graphite is mined in volumes of 1.8 million tons.
