Electric Cadillac Lyriqs must be recalled due to brake defect

General Motors is recalling 21,469 electric SUVs made by its Cadillac brand over concerns that the vehicles could lose their braking ability.

The recalled vehicles include Cadillac Lyriq all-wheel drive vehicles from the 2023 to 2024 model years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the anti-lock brake systems in these vehicles could unexpectedly activate and release brake pressure in the vehicle’s service brake system, causing a loss of braking ability and increasing the risk of a crash.

The U.S. auto safety regulator added that the condition was caused by a software flaw in the electronic brake control module and that the company would fix the problem with a software update.

GM said in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it was not aware of any injuries or deaths as a result of the crash.

NHTSA has begun a preliminary review of complaints about loss of brake assist in 3,322 Lyriq SUVs since April.

The Lyriq SUV is currently driving GM’s overall electric vehicle sales, following the discontinuation of the Bolt EV in December.

GM sold 21,930 electric vehicles in the second quarter, with the Lyriq accounting for 7,294 of its total sales. The car starts at nearly $60,000 and can go up to $90,000, making it a fairly premium electric vehicle option.

Our team of journalists does not recommend any GM electric vehicles because most of them come with defects from the factory.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV was the biggest lemon, and now the Lyriq, which had manufacturing issues before it was delivered to buyers. The same thing happened with another model, the Hummer EV, which had manufacturing issues from the beginning of production.
