Electric Ski Buses Hit the Slopes in Austrian Ski Resort

Get ready for a greener, quieter ride to the slopes this winter. The Salzburger Saalachtal tourism region is making a bold statement about its commitment to sustainability by replacing its entire diesel ski bus fleet with three brand-new electric buses.

A Quantum Leap for Sustainable Ski Tourism

“This is a quantum leap for us,” says Willi Leitinger, managing director of Almenwelt Lofer. The modern “MAN Lion’s City E” vehicles will transport locals and guests free of charge every day from December 22nd to March 23rd, 2025, covering the ski bus routes between Weißbach and Unken.

The move towards electrification is a significant step in the region’s efforts to prioritize environmental protection and set an example for other tourism destinations. “Tourism bashing is widespread and the cable car industry in particular is often unfairly portrayed as a ‘CO₂ bogeyman’,” says Wolfgang Fegg, managing director of TVB Salzburger Saalachtal.

Balancing Sustainability and Economics

While recognizing the importance of environmental responsibility, Fegg acknowledges the financial implications of this transition: “The routes, stops, and timings of ski bus operations have been continuously optimized in recent years; the new measure is now ‘another piece of the puzzle in our efforts. From a purely economic perspective, we would have to continue with the diesel buses.'”

He declines to disclose specific figures but confirms that “significantly higher” costs are anticipated.

Efficiency on the Slopes

Designed for daily use, the e-buses boast a range of approximately 300 kilometers per charge. Throughout the season, they will collectively cover around 45,000 kilometers. Estimates indicate that the region could save around eight tons of CO₂ per season thanks to the switch to electric power.

Powering the Future of Sustainable Mobility

To ensure smooth operation of the electric fleet, four fast charging stations with a powerful output of 200 kW each and four normal charging stations with 22 kW each have been installed at the Almenwelt valley station. Salzburg AG collaborated on the charging infrastructure project, which also provided a welcome synergy effect by facilitating necessary network reinforcement in Lofer town center.

The charging stations are not exclusively for the ski buses. They are also available for use by private electric vehicle owners – another step in promoting sustainable transportation within the region.
