Electric and hybrid cars: sales grow 55.5% in March

2023-04-27 19:33:52

The sale of electric or hybrid vehicles increased by 55.5% in March 2023. The increase is compared to the same month of the previous year. In the last three months, the growth recorded was 50% compared to the same period in 2022, according to data from Abve (Brazilian Association of Electric Vehicles).

In total, 5,989 units were sold, making March this year the second best month for the sale of trams in the historical series, starting in 2021. The same goes for the quarterly result, the best ever recorded, with 14,787 light electrified vehicles sold. Compared to the first 3 months of 2021, the increase was 223%.

“The increase in sales of electric vehicles is a worldwide trend that should intensify more and more. First, because this type of vehicle has a series of economic advantages, such as lower fuel and maintenance costs”, evaluates André Brunetta, Director of Digital & Innovation at Estapar. “In addition, they are increasingly powerful and efficient, since the absence of a combustion engine leaves the car lighter and with more space”.

trends and barriers

Something that contributes to the popularization of electric and hybrid models is the fact that countries in Europe and American states are approving laws that foresee the end of the production of combustion engines in the coming decades, as part of the measures to combat climate change. In Brazil, electric or hybrid cars pay less or are even exempt from taxes, in addition to being free from the municipal vehicle rotation in the city of São Paulo.

However, the sector still faces some challenges. “The main obstacle is still the price. Batteries, for example, are very expensive, which increases the value of these vehicles. Another problem is the autonomy, also because in some models, the batteries still need to be recharged frequently. And recharging these engines can take more than an hour, much more than the minutes of refueling combustion vehicles”, ponders Brunetta.

Working to consolidate the infrastructure market, many companies have emerged in recent years. Among them is Zletric, which consolidates itself in the national territory as a facilitator of the electromobility ecosystem with a wide semi-public charging network installed in the country. There are more than 650 chargers in 15 states, in addition to a private network of fast chargers in operation, with nine equipment present in the states of SP, SC and RS.

“There is no doubt that electromobility is no longer a promise, but a certainty of the future. The issue of charging infrastructure cannot be an obstacle and the market is still looking for efficiency and maturity. We believe that our role is to assist in this maturation, promoting discussions and alignments so that this future arrives faster”, evaluates Schaan.

Brazilian scenario

In Brazil, the availability of ethanol, a fuel considered cheaper and more efficient from an environmental point of view, may favor the popularization of hybrid vehicles. “These cars have a combustion engine that charges the electric one, increasing the autonomy, allowing the batteries to be smaller and cheaper and, therefore, uniting the advantages of the two models. But, in the long term, the world trend of fully electric vehicles should also hit the country hard”, concludes Brunetta.

There is also an expectation in the international market, which affects the Brazilian market, due to the reduction in battery prices and a greater offer of electric models by automakers such as Volkswagen, Nissan and Hyundai. In addition, Tesla, GM, Ford and their battery suppliers can open new factories, reaping cost savings from mass production.
