Three people were killed in clashes in northwest Liberia between supporters of the two main parties ten days before the presidential and legislative elections, the UN and the Economic Community of West African States said on Saturday. (ECOWAS).
ECOWAS and the UN “condemn in the strongest terms” the clashes on Friday in the Lofa region between the Unity party of former vice-president Joseph Boakai (2006-2018) and the Coalition for Change Democratic Party (CDC), the party of George Weah, former international football star converted to politics and president since 2018.
Civil wars between 1989 and 2003
The two international organizations deplored in a press release “the loss of three lives” and called on the leaders of these parties “to firmly urge their supporters to refrain from any provocation and any other act of violence”. Guaranteeing fair and peaceful elections is a major challenge in a country ravaged by civil wars between 1989 and 2003.
Liberia’s main political parties committed in April 2023 to refrain from violence and use judicial institutions to resolve electoral conflicts that may arise before and following the elections. ECOWAS and the UN urged the Liberian National Police to restore calm and “conduct prompt and impartial investigations, make their findings public and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
The US Embassy also condemned the violence and called for prosecution. The two political parties blamed each other for the clashes. More than 2.4 million voters are registered for the presidential and legislative elections to nominate 73 deputies and 15 senators at the end of their mandate out of the 30 in the country.
