Electoral judge admits lawsuit against Ecuador’s president for political gender violence

Quito, August 24, 2024 (EFE).– The electoral judge Fernando Muñoz admitted the lawsuit against the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa Azinpresented by its vice president, Veronica Abad Rojasand summoned the parties to a hearing next Thursday, September 12.

The Vice President accused Noboa of alleged political gender violence, which could be considered a “very serious electoral violation” and could lead to a sentence of dismissal, a fine and loss of political rights for a period of two to four years.

Several digital media outlets reported that Judge Muñoz, in his verdict on the lawsuit, denied the “judicial assistance” requested by Verónica Abad.

The judge determined that there was a lack of “grounds that demonstrate the impossibility” of accessing expert or documentary evidence.

After admitting the complaint, Judge Muñoz set September 12 as the date for the “single hearing of evidence and arguments.”

In addition to the president NoboaVeronica Abad denounced the chancellor, Gabriela Sommerfeld Roseroes; to the Deputy Minister of Government, Esteban Torresalready the presidential advisor Diana Jacome Silva.

Just last Thursday, August 15, the advisor Diana Jácome filed an electoral complaint against Vice President Verónica Abad, for allegedly trying to use the law as a political weapon against the government.

Diana Jácome asked the Electoral Disputes Tribunal (TCE) to suspend Verónica Abad’s political rights and impose a fine on her.

The scandal between the Vice President and the President, which emerged several months ago, has worsened in recent days and coincides with the progress of the electoral process for the presidential and legislative elections of February 9, 2025.

A confrontation that has been going on for months in Ecuador

The conflict between the two appeared shortly after they ran together for last year’s electoral process, elections called early by the former president conservative Guillermo Lassowho did not complete his 2021-2025 term.

The distance between the two candidates was already noticeable during the electoral campaign, whose last joint activity was their swearing-in in November 2023.

After assuming the leadership of the State, Noboa appointed Veronica Abbot as Ecuadorian Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Israelwith the mission of seeking peace in that region of the world, although the distance did not calm the discord between them.

He will seek reelection and does not want to comply with a rule

Noboa announced that he will run for re-election to remain in power for a full four-year term, but he fears leaving the presidency to Verónica Abad who, according to internal regulations, must succeed him during the period of leave that the ruler must request to dedicate himself to the electoral campaign.

According to executive authorities, it would be “disastrous” that Veronica Abbot replace to Noboa in the Presidency during the electoral campaign, since it could alter the plans of his government.

Likewise, Verónica Abad faces another complaint in the same TCE for an alleged violation in the 2023 local elections, when she was running as a candidate for mayor of the Andean city of Cuenca.

If the accusation is confirmed, it could mean the loss of his political rights.
