Democrats in the US who also fear for the lives of Petro and France
Returning to the issue of security, one of the concerns in these elections is the security of Gustavo Petro and his vice-presidential ticket, Francia Márquez. The two have received several threats in this campaign, have had to cancel events in some areas, and have given speeches in public squares surrounded by shields and bodyguards.
“We remain vigilant for credible threats once morest presidential candidates,” says an open letter from 22 Democratic congressmen in the United States, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (from New York), Joaquin Castro (from Texas) and Jesús “Chuy” García, of Illinois, who promoted the letter addressed to Secretary of State Antony Blinken to support the presidential elections in Colombia next Sunday.
The Democrats not only mention the threats to the life of Petro and France, but also cite the irregularities that occurred in March, during the legislative elections, when the pre-count of the Registrar did not reflect the total votes that were later counted in the Council. National Electoral. “These irregularities set a problematic precedent that may lead to further attempts to hamper Colombia’s democratic process,” the letter says. Here you can read it.
The letter is added to another that was made public last weekend and signed by nearly a hundred political leaders around the world, such as the US congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, the French deputy Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the former Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa, and the American intellectual Noam Chomsky. “We, elected representatives, leaders and leaders from around the world, express our grave concern regarding the growing threat of violence, murder and interference in the presidential elections of May 29 in Colombia,” says that letter.
