Elderly women were tricked into handing over ATM cards: Now an assistant is in prison

It happened at the Court in Hjørring.

The man stood trial in court for having participated in fraud against four women aged from 76 to 89 years.

The frauds took place on 3 April this year, when the 38-year-old together with others called the women and tricked them into handing over ATM cards and codes, after which several thousand kroner were withdrawn from the card.

The man confessed that he had helped to drive around to different addresses and had twice been inside gas stations to buy cards that can be used for online payments.

– The man explained in court that he had been in Denmark for several periods, where he has had various jobs, among other things he has sold newspapers, says prosecutor at North Jutland Police, Katrine Meldgaard.

– One day he met some men who offered him money to drive around with them, she says.

The four elderly women who have been victims of fraud have all said that it was Danish men without an accent who called them, and also Danish men who collected cards and codes.

– It is our presumption that there are others behind the fraud, and the 38-year-old has been an assistant. There is another man who is in custody in the case, and the investigation is still ongoing, says Katrine Meldgaard.

The 38-year-old man, who has a wife and children in Romania, chose to confess to large parts of what he was accused of.

In addition to the prison sentence and deportation for six years, the man was also sentenced to pay compensation of DKK 8,115, which is the amount he managed to use from the older women’s debit card.
