Elathur Train Fire Witnessed Nine Times by Rahmath Sharafudeen

Anusha Govind wrote an article regarding a tragic accident involving Rahmat and her family. At 9:30 pm, Rahmat’s husband Sharafuddin received a call from a stranger informing him of the accident. When Sharafuddin asked regarding Rahmat, the stranger said that he did not see anyone and the phone was lying on the ground. Sharafuddin found Rahmat’s neighbor Razik and handed over the phone, but Razik also did not see Rahmat or her child. Sharafuddin searched for them at the medical college and private hospital but did not find them. Three bodies were eventually found during the search conducted by Sharafuddin and his relatives with the help of the police. Rahmat and her child were among the deceased. Sharafuddin had married Rahmat four years ago.

At 9.30 pm, Sharafuddin called to know where he was. Some stranger picked up the phone and told regarding the accident. When asked regarding Rahmat, he said that he did not see anyone and the phone was lying on the ground.

When the body of Rehmat, who died in an accident in Kannur Palotupalli, was brought home, her husband Sharafuddin was sobbing.

Kozhikode: When Rahmat was leaving for her sister-in-law’s house in Kadalundi, her husband Sharafuddin said: “Get back on the 6.10 pm train or reach home soon…” “Rahmat went with her neighbor Rasikh. Chaliyatulla Kunummal came home and called. But did not get the 6.10 train. That’s when I boarded the Alleppey-Kannur Express. He also brought his sister’s daughter Sahara. “What is known is information that is not seen” – Sharafuddin said while waiting in front of the medical college mortuary to release Rahmat’s body found on the railway.

At 9.30 pm, Sharafuddin called to know where he was. Some stranger picked up the phone and told regarding the accident. When asked regarding Rahmat, he said that he did not see anyone and the phone was lying on the ground. He asked the stranger if he would investigate. After searching, he found Razik and handed over the phone. When Razik also said that he did not see Rahmat and the baby, he took the car and left here.

When I reached Elathur station and inquired, I was told that the injured were taken to the medical college and that they would go there and inquire. There was still hope of being found alive. Then they searched the medical college and the private hospital, but Rahmat and the child were not there. He reached Elathur station once more and told the matter. Sharafuddin says that the three bodies were found during the search conducted by him and his relatives under the leadership of the police.

Sharafuddin, whose first wife died, married Rahmat four years ago at Badiriya Mansil, Mattannur Pallot Church.



The tragic news of Rahmat’s sudden demise in a railway accident has left behind a grieving family and community. Her husband Sharafuddin’s efforts to find her and their child, who were missing following the accident, ended in heartbreak as they were found among the fatalities.
