This is stated in a statement by Greek police for rural rally which was held yesterday in the center of Athens, referring both to the “absolute cooperation and the cool attitude shown by the participants in the mobilizations”, as well as the citizens, who “implemented our recommendations”, cooperating with the Authorities.
The announcement of EL.AS states:
“After the completion of the rural mobilizations in the center of Athens, traffic on the main roads has been restored.
During these, the Greek Police implemented a network of traffic, order and security measures, in order to ensure the fundamental right of citizens to assemble, without, however, unduly disrupting the social and economic life of the city, in accordance with the provisions of the P.D. . 73/2020 on the regulation of public outdoor gatherings.
Determining factors for the achievement of the above objectives were the absolute cooperation and the cool attitude shown by the participants in the mobilizations as well as the understanding and cooperation of the citizens, who implemented our recommendations, thus contributing significantly to the maintenance of social peace and order.
At the same time, the police officers managed the situation calmly and with a professional approach, demonstrating absolute respect for the rights and freedoms of citizens, confirming the commitment of the Greek Police to maintaining order and protecting citizens.
The Greek Police will continue to work daily adapting to the needs of the times in order to strengthen mutual trust with citizens, for a society of respect, justice and mutual understanding”.
They left with their tractors in sections and organized by the Regiment farmersas they had announced at 11:00, following the big rally they held yesterday, Tuesday, February 20.
The farmers are making their way back, making appointments at the blockades, where they will decide how to continue their agitations. In fact, by 12:00 Syntagma Square was reopened and the roads that were closed were reopened to traffic.
Some, more hard-line farmers, tabled yesterday the idea of keeping the tractors out of Parliament until their demands were met, but it was decided not to change the plan and to leave piecemeal and coordinated, in the same way as their arrival in Athens took place.
The farmers today and tomorrow they are going to proceed to general assemblies in the blocks to decide the future of their mobilizations. As Rizos Maroudas, a member of the coordination committee of the blocs in ERT, said yesterday, they are either aiming to block roads, or they will proceed to other forms of mobilization. Giorgos Doubiotis, head of the Atalanti bloc, speaking to ERT and the show “Syndesesi” noted that the farmers organized a grand agricultural rally, during which they showed both morals and dignity.
“We came here to claim our survival in the future, in our jobs. Because you know, our work for us is our life. What will make us sustainable is the introduction of rural oil at the pump and not the consumption tax refund, that 82 million. Because when the government distributes 82 million in the farmers’ pockets, they end up with crumbs. We want the introduction of rural oil at the pump.
Secondly, regarding the subsidies of OPEKEPE, the minister Mr. Avgenakis came out and told us that the bad president of OPEKEPE and bad administration are to blame. You know this is not appointed by the farmers, the government put it in and apologized to us. Sorry what to do with it? Our children lack the basics. Should I go to the tutoring centers and my children’s activities to tell them Evgenakis’s apology… it won’t go through. The money was ours and should have been paid. Due to their own failure, we have not received our subsidies this year,” he stressed.
A farmer from the block of Thebes told ERT that he expects their rights to be vindicated. “Until our demands are justified, we believe we will remain here,” he said, noting that they are waiting for information from all the blocs on when they will leave.
Another farmer from Kalamata emphasized that if their demands are not answered, no one is going to leave and nothing will move.
